Monkey repellent - any ideas?

Can anyone offer advice about how to encourage monkeys to avoid visiting my balcony and eating my plants?

There's usually only one, quite a large male, who has a fondness for palm leaves. He allows just enough time between visits for the plants to start recovering. However, we have had up to 13 monkeys make their way through, usually earlier in the morning.

I don't want to hurt the monkeys, but I would like them to keep off. When I do see them, banging broom handles on railings makes a bit of difference in unsettling them, but I'm wary of getting close as they have big pointy teeth, which they like to show me!

Anyone resolved this problem or heard of any tricks?

Thanks!

Put some Tabasco sauce on what ever they are eating, this will usually drive them away.

I seem to remember that they are quite afraid of snakes. Get a rubber one and try it !

Hold your arms/hands as if you are about to fire a sling shot or throw a stone at them if they threaten you

This is an animal control problem.

Best way to control them, and thereby avoiding the pointy end of their facial gestures is to deny them access.

Access denial requires some sort of barrier. I don't believe you would want to totally enclose your balcony, so another barrier that does not compromise the balcony's utility is called for.

Answer: Electric fence. Denies, deters, defends and detects.

Virtually invisible, non lethal solution.

As well as protection from the smaller primates it will offer significant protection from the unauthorised ingress of the greater apes as well.

A properly installed system can range from a permanent mains powered setup or a battery powered relocatable solution. Good systems can be configured to raise an alarm in the event of non authorised contact or attempted tampering with the defenses.

Don't attempt to connect lethal mains directly to a barrier. You will be spending too much time removing dead critters from and around it and may well harm yourself in a non-insignificant manner.

PM me if you want to know more.

IF there are trees close to your house then it might be a problem for any repellent to work because even monkeys could jump off the trees direct to your balcony. so my suggestion is try chopping the branches of the trees which are closest to your house or balcony & try using electrical wire fencing which are not lethal even for monkeys. or use a scent despencer which would avoid monkeys to enter your balcony

These urban monkeys have adapted. The overhead cabling provides them more conduits for safe travel well above the traffic and even closer to their destinations.

What is this scent dispenser? What is the scent?
