FYI the banner ad slogan was changed for reasons way outside the comments on this forum. Believe me. In fact if anything, the many positive comments outweighing the negative ones were an encouragement.

marklatham,I honestly thought you were not in Cambodia. I know there is a lot of corruption .I do not believe that all gov .ministers in Cambodia are corrupt.I have seen with my own eyes some of the good that is done.I have also seen a lot of unbelievably bad things going on eg.the enforced evictions.It would be foolish for you to name any place if you live there.I honestly thought that with you had left years ago from your posting.In that case I am suprised that you keep posting such negative speculation,especially about ministers being involved. You mentioned a place someone told you about a couple of years ago that had underage girls.I honestly think that it would have been shut down by now.If you had said about the pedo village about 11 kms north of Phnom Penh,that is gone now.That was on international news.I am sure many places still operate,but I very much doubt anyone is running anything in PP on a grand scale.A lot of bar owners have been imprisoned this year as you know.They have just had another crackdown on prostitution a couple of months ago.There is advertising all over PP about abuse with a phone number to report to,usually on the back of tuk-tuks.
Poverty and lack of opportunity is what drives the sex trade.You are right about money talking.A lot of investment is pouring in from other countries and if it all went where it should the problem would be far smaller.With a lot of people skimming the money I fear for the ordinary Cambodians who are struggling for survival.It is always the poorest who pay the highest price,usually their life.
In January I witnessed a gov minister handing out vast amounts of rice to several orphanages and needy people.I know these people were in dire need and the help was appreciated.I have to look at something positive because otherwise there would be no hope.
Due to negativity a lot of these charities are losing money.A lot of people give money.I decided not to give money,but helped with buying tools so the people could help themselves,which they did.It is not easy to fix a place up if you have no plane or drill.A charity had provided a bookcase and a table and chairs.I spent my holiday money buying books so the children had something to read,and put in electric light so it was safer at night.I bought practical things like mosquito nets,my only regret was that I could not do more.If I had handed over money I am sure it would have gone on other things.
I am no saint,I had intended to spend my money on women and having a good time.Going around various orphanages and other places opened my eyes and I decided to help out.I saw people without hope. There are lots of westerners in Cambodia who do far more than people like me.I was only on a few weeks holiday.It was the best time I have ever had.I could have done the Pattaya bars as in previous years,but I wanted to go to Cambodia because of what I had seen on the net.To meet a high gov official and see them do something positive was a boost for me.after seeing so much negativity.

AUSTRALIANS are the biggest exploiters of Thailand's child sex industry, according to a study by Johns Hopkins University.

Australians make up the largest portion of foreign sex offenders against children in Thailand, according to the research that studied patterns of arrests and prosecutions between 1995 and 2006.

Our cash fuels the US$31.6 billion industry in child sex trafficking, which sees 1.8 million children as young as eight years old being sold for sex - sometimes up to ten times a day - until they're considered "worthless" before they reach their 30th birthday.

McMenamin says Australian men are among the world's worst child sex offenders. Australians hold the dubious honour of being the first Westerners charged with sex abuse of minors in several countries including Thailand, the Philippines, Fiji, Samoa and East Timor. Australian child sex offenders have been identified in a further 20 countries.

Wherever child prostitution occurs as an industry, McMenamin says, large numbers of Australian men can be found. And it is not just the traditional fleshpots such as Thailand and the Philippines where men travel to have sex with children.

Is this Aussie self-loathing genuine, or is it an outgrowth of the country's battle with conservatism?

Anyone who believes Australians are more perverse than the rest of the world is deluding themselves. Anyone who gives money to an NGO because of that belief is being suckered.

I would not trust the figures of an organisation such as Child Wise who let their drivers tear around Phnom Penh on the wrong side of the road in their big shiny expensive 4Wds . One almost killed me the other day coming full on down MY SIDE of Norodom at about 80km and YES it WAS a CW car.

Pursat provincial police on Monday arrested a 64-year-old man who is suspected of raping two underage girls, aged 8 and 9 years. Victims told police from Roleap commune that the incident occurred when they were visiting their grandmother’s home last Tuesday. While their grandmother was out of the house, the man appeared and raped the girls, threatening to kill them if they told anyone. The man than asked the two girls to be his wives. Police said the suspect confessed to the crime.
