this would have to be the fastest wifi i have yet used in Phnom Penh. Good brewed coffee and good food.

Lone Star Saloon.

if anyone has any other spots please let me know. La Croisette (river front cnr street 144) has a reasonable connection as well

Cafe Living Room (st 306 near Norodom Blvd) has a good connection, free with a small purchase, but is often busy which slows things down (esp those making voice calls despite the polite request not to). During off peak times (weekday mornings, weekends mostly) it's got pretty good speed, also good coffee.

Villa Langka (St 282, behind Wat Langka) has a good fast connection and also a nice pool for a dip. Very friendly staff.

I will second La Croisette although it has been slow lately. K West also has a good connection (but the food is not so great and expensive). Also on the river the new Jup Cafe next to Riverhouse also has wifi but I've not had too much experience with it.

Cafe Fresco and FCC charge $2/hour for wifi which is crazy. The advertisement of "free" wifi at Fresco between 3-5 with purchase of a cup of coffee is a rip-off-- you only get 1/2 hour free. Not sure if Chow pulls the same scam.

Oh yea and Cafe 33 isn't so bad- although the power seems to go out there frequently.

Boddhi Tree Aram (St. 244) has great access, free, what I think is the best coffee in PP, and good food.

Cafe 33 for wireless is good

- good connection
- good coffee (but expensive)
- comfortable seating and aircon

However, I don't go back after several experiences of choking on the heavy cigarette smoke.

The place has no fresh air, just air-cons, and sometimes there are 6-10 people smoking and not giving a **** about the rest of the customers.

I tried to bring this to the attention of the manager, even wrote a note (I'm not the only customer to notice this), but management weren't at all interested.

Kill all smokers, that's what I say (or, at least make them suck back in their toxic waste)

We also have wi-fi in the bar at Pickled Parrot, admittedly it has been a bit slow with intermitent losses lately hence a new ISP provider starting 1st December. Now we have 256k available which is free for as long as you like providing you spend $5 with us.
We also have great coffee with regular size Cuppaccino @ $2 or a Mug for $3.50! We are also fully airconditioned, open 24 hours and serve good food from 6am to 12am.

I got nothing to hide! The old was Camintel & the new Ezecom. Whether one is better than the other we will have to wait & see, but the speed difference should help.....

I love both these places - not wild about the bars & steakhouses mentioned elsewhere on this thread. But the noise levels preclude them from now on.

Are there any quiet equivalents?

ran a speedtest ( http://www.speedtest.com ) at the pickled parrotthe other day, recorded 53kbps up, 22kpbs down ... dunno if i'm just unlucky, or if it's always that slow ... tried to download a firefox update, download speed ranged from 7k/s to 1.2k/s ... Puzzled

went to the Pickled Parrot yesterday (Sunday) all seemed good to me. noticed about 4 - 5 others online at the same time. and I am fussy about my speeds. maybe the ISP he uses does not have much Sunday traffic

Yeah, Ezecom doesn't have too many private users, so off-peak speeds tend to be consistently high. I use them at home.

@Az... maybe the per-user download speed is capped at the Pickled Parrot to prevent bandwidth hogs slowing down everyone else?

Nope, except when he's running speed tests to max out the system!

I suspect the results may have been 53KB/s down and 22KB/s up, which isn't too far off a 512Kbps link speed (64/32) assuming there was probably other internet activity besides Az's speed test at the time.

Not sure why the Firefox download would have come at such a reduced speed, though...

PS that URL you gave just has some random camping on it - possibly dodgy content linked? Try using http://www.speedtest.com.sg/ instead.

For reference I'm with Ezecom 512K and I get 510Kbps down (63.8KB/s), 292Kbps up (36.5KB/s) at the moment. That's basically 100% download rate performance and 114% upload performance. This is typical - I rarely if ever have any concerns about the download speed.

We use Ezecom 256kb deal but it is not dedicated so generally it slows down with high volume traffic which is around lunch and late afternoons . Otherwise mostly it is fast, well faster than previously! I too tried that test site and just got "site not found" from the links!

The pavillion in street 19 opposite wat botum, usually DL speed of 30 ko/s, Living room speed is really better since 1st december as
they changed provider, close to an average of 30ko/s, Fresco really sucks because its not free, their food is expensive enough, don't need to charge an astonishing Two dollars an hour for the wifi. Same critic for Java who offers an online access at one dollar an hour.
Those places should all offfer free wifi.

In europe usual dl speed is 400 ko/s, if we get close to 30 or 40 in ko/s in cambodia its pretty good, faster is too expensive for those kind of buisnesses, you'll never get more than that in a wifi cafee here anyway, but 5 or 6 ko/s is really slow barely enough for mails, forget about surfing or DL.

WELL finally after weeks of problems with the internet, various calls to Camintel & Ezecom the problem seems to be resolved! Having checked out the cabling into the building I was AMAZED to find that the so called Camintel Technicians had 3 individual pieces of cable, all different, all connected by simply twisting together, with no insulation or terminals all over a 6 meter span!!!?? No bloody wonder we had problems..........

Not telling! Sad All of my best places have recently been squatted by people Skyping or downloading; sometimes I can't even get ONE web page to load. I have been to quite a few places in the city, but given the behavior of some of the people I've seen (staying for hours and hours, never ordering anything, using up massive amounts of bandwidth...) I'll be very tempted to keep it to myself if I find a great place!! (That said, Anthony knows that I've already "told" when I've found good places... Smile Although I'm going to have to modify some of my evaluations...)

At the Pickled Parrot we do exactly that, spend $5 and your wi fi is free. We do not have any problems with "ferals" either!

Update in wifi cafes, as I've been all over town lately looking for a quiet one & one where the wifi is working:

Metro still out of commission till the weekend.

Lone Star has been down, due back on any day. But deafening construction by day, above LS.

Huxley's fast internet, tho loud construction right opposite.

Living Room Internet works, but construction adjacent very loud.

My best one right now is La Croisette (Riverside): net fast most days; no construction noise; food tolerable. Plus aircon if needed. About the best combo in town in my limited experience.

Don't even bother with Cafe Sentiment - i checked out the new one on St 63. Aside from the waft of sewage that came in every time someone opened the door, the connection was woeful. it was varying from a few bps (yes, that's not kbps) to 0. i suspect it was the half dozen or so Khmers in there downloading porn or music or whatever they were doing....totally not worth the experience although drinks are pretty cheap.

Just what I like to read when I'm sitting in the place. Shock

At the moment, I'm getting a whopping 4.6Kb/sec while trying to download a pdf document from the states.

I don't like the rude staff at Sentiment either - plus that kinda generic/franchise look.

My travels in he last week have revealed that:

La Croisette on Riverside might be the best deal in town as they're online all hours, & the food is not that expensive by Riverside standards

Metro is back on (I'm there as I write) - tho their Internet stops at 6.30pm or so

Lone Star Saloon in St 172, 200m west of Norodom is a pretty good connection (& as a bonus they have the only photo of George W Bush remaining on display in the Western world)

Living Room & Da Gusto in BKK are as good as ever, tho the former closes at 8.30pm

If you're near Olympic there's always T & Coffee on Sihanouk opposite the market - cheap & basic, but a good enough connection. They have a branch on Monivong near Wat Kon too.

To all the above would have to be added the T & Coffee franchise.

I've used the Olympic & Monivong branches, & am now sitting in the Tuol Kork one, which is much the same as the rest:

Slightly down-at-heel furnishings & furniture.
Food prices: pretty cheap
Food quality: not as wretched as before, tho still nothing like the mouth-watering photos in the menu
Brilliantly-selected staff: always smiling & helpful
Good wi-fi
