Crossed the japanese bridge yesterday and drove 10 ks up the highway for lunch.
The road is congested and pot holed but if one turns off to the right just past the new phnom penh development an oasis awaits.
There is a lovely wat and associated buildings and several khmer restauarants built over the river.
A hammock right on the river with views towards another wat on silk island is a great place to spend an hour or two.The wind is very fresh this time of year and it is actually quite cold.
Food is standard cambodian, with no english script on the menu and we had pork ribs and sour chicken soup washed down with anchors and ice.
The local cat feasted on the bones and he actually devoured every scrap, smashing pork and chicken bones with a powerful jaw.
Driving home I mused on the new phnom penh construction sign, erected by you guessed it,a korean company.I think it will be old phnom penh before that patch of sand is built on.
However they have built a huge folly,a gate topped with golden balls and a dusty boulevard with those lovely colonial lamp posts on the median interspersed with palms.
No development is complete without the huge entry statement and the road that leads to nowhere.
An avenue of broken dreams.
