Dear all,

We have to move house, within Phnom Penh. I think we found a nice place nearby. But it's easier said than done, because we have all our own furniture etc.

Does anyone have experience in moving a lot of stuff within Phnom Penh? How and where can you arrange these things? Are there companies (not the expensive international movers) or do I need to rent a truck and hire people from the street?

Thanks,
Evelien

Last time I had to move a lot of furniture, I just sent a motodop from the street to go and fetch a truck from the Central Market for me, with a few guys included to help with the moving. For $20 I moved a few km away, including down one flight and up two flights of stairs. I only had half a truckload of furniture and it was mostly rattan, so if you have a lot more or heavy stuff the price might be higher.

This will take a reasonable amount of Khmer (or an English-speaking moto driver) if you're wanting to bargain the price down, as you'll need to explain it to the motodop and get him to bargain on your behalf before the truck drives across town to your place, to be polite. I guess you should send one of your regular motodops to fetch for you because he's going to want you to be happy. You'd undoubtedly get a better price if you went to Central Market yourself to bargain. I didn't bargain on that $20 price at all - it was a really hot day and I was tired and just wanted it done. I reckon they'd have done it for $12-$14.

I'd say estimate how long it will take to move, pick a price you're happy with, and send off a reliable moto driver to get the truck for you at that price with a few guys to carry the stuff.

Standard cautions apply - make sure that you have at least one person keeping an eye on the truck while it's parked in the street, so randoms don't make off with your furniture, and also make sure that you're overseeing things in the house so that no valuables go missing. No money, wallets, purses, iPods, phones etc should be left lying around while so many people you don't know are moving in and out of your house.

a good time to go to the central market would be about 9-10am ... this is around when all the pick-ups who were hoping to get enough customers for a trip out to the provinces somewhere, didn't find enough to make the trip worthwhile, and are starting to mope around looking depressed ... yet too early for them to start gathering customers for the evening trips ...

the other places to try are around the GST bus stop (near the holiday inn), and at the western end of the japanese bridge ... around the same time in the mornings ...

unless there are many many flights of staris to climb, or you have a lot of heavy stuff (solid wood, big mirrors, etc), you shouldn't be paying more than $20 for a 3-4 hour job, for a driver + 1-2 helpers ...

If it's a hot day, offer them a cold drink from a street vendor, past experience has shown the little gestures really get appreciated, and the moving moves along a lot quicker too

No need to hit Central Market.Simply call one of the Following Blue Trucks;

Mr Ri 012 793 100 ( khmer speaking )
Mr Poveng 012 886 992 ( khmer speaking )

They will come to your house, load everything and move it pronto. About $50 or so.

I would call Crown Relocation, then its Expat supervised. Bit pricey, but it is professional. Owen Perry runs the show and is a good honest Kiwi and a nice guy.

Just like everything else here, you pay peanuts and you get monkeys. There are plenty here, then you just have to have enough expat friends to ride in the truck with your stuff, stay at the home you are moving out of and someone at the new location to prevent them from ransacking your stuff. Pay the extra and get it done right without loss.

$50 also a bit pricey, I guess the blue trucks are all standard size, the kind you transport pigs in.
I moved 3km recently, 3 guys, 2 trips, $35.

Just find the nearest LARGE sized Blue truck and ask them. There are clusters of them everywhere. Ask your nearest English speaking moto dop to help. I recently moved an entire house about 3km and it cost $15 per trip. It took 4 guys in a truck 4 trips ( we HEAPS and HEAPS of LARGE stuff ) so cost $60 and I tipped them all $2.50 each. So $70 and 4 hours later we were moved. They are NOT like pro omvers so suggest you buy some cheap tarps if you need to protect stuff and a rope or two.

Compared to the $$00s it would cost back home its a bargain.
