i was riding around in the car for work last week at the corner of sihanouk and st 63 and this guy crosses the road in front of my car.
i thought to myself, ''where do i know him from?'' and then i realise that i had just crossed paths with the barang panhandler complete with his green and red striped rugby jumper!!!
compassion is all well and good ... but since he's refused all offers from his family to have him extradited/sent back home, whatever the case might be, and he's refused, well ... also consider that were he to go home, if he wanted to get help, there , he would have access to detox programs (and medication, at that) not yet available in this country ...
I reckon that a few positive words would do more good than belittling or insulting him on the street.
I think a solid beating would be in order.
THE KID

Telling him where to go probably won't do much to improve his mental state - a polite brush off or even some kind words might be more constructive.I am setting up an NGO for capacity building of expat meth heads. We're called Feeling Groovy (slow down your going too fast) Want to be a major donor?
any word on the launch party wahwah? should be an interesting crowd

THE KID
Why?
Duh..geez........lets see.........BECAUSE HE IS A SCAMMING BASTARD.
I would rather him begging and spinning a line than physically robbing tourists like most Khmer junkies do.
IMHO he deserves some pity rather than a beating.
Jamie (yes, I found out his name) has been here for many years and and according to some people here who know him is in much better shape now that previous years.
one reason and 1 only, why i feel no pity whatsoever for that guy ...
i see plenty of kids who genuiney don't have money to eat, scrounging in rubbish dumps to find some scraps of this and that to sell ... or begging for left-over scraps of food left on the plate, and genuinly grateful for a slice of pizza or even just some plain rice ...
and then you've got this guy going around with his sob story, scamming money off kind-hearted tourists, to feed his drug addiction ...
Fair enough, you don't have to feel pity for him.
But I don't see any reason for people to hope he gets a beating.
Drug addiction is a physical and mental illness - addicts are already beaten down inside, hence their outward condition.
i don't believe drug addiction should be considered an illness, since the word illness gives the impression of a sickness that we catch from someone else, or get from a viral or bacterial infection ... whereas drug addiction is a symptom of an act of mindless and self-inflicted stupidity ...
for things like poverty, lack of education, unemployment, there's a cure, though granted, it takes both time and money ...
even infectious diseases these days can now be treated, eg. HIV, hep B, etc ...
but a cure for stupidity ... ? ...
PS. wahwah, perhaps that's what you should be doing ... writing a proposal for a research grant on finding the cure to human stupidity ... bet you'd get funding money pouring in from all over in no time ...
Kind words from the resident medical expert on the board, azza.
I think you will find that adddictions are often genetic, not self inflicted.
i hope if you have kids that they are not addicts of any sort,if they have addictions then you may change your tune.
Saw the barang on sisowath the other evening heading north at a rate of knots.
He was wearing balck pants and a two tone light blue striped long sleeve jumper.
NUTZ! He approached me as well a few months ago and relayed the same sob story...not enough cash yada yada yada. He was sober, but I could tell he is on something and refused him. Which is normal enough for here...considering I turned down probably 20-30 tuk tuks, moto dops and beggars on my way south along the riverfront (ran into him just across from the Palace...he actually ran across the street in his hustlin attempt) Thanks for this posting! I am so happy I didn't give him an inch!!!
Seems like this blokey is getting quite famous.
Maybe it's time for a reality TV type thing; small film crew to film his activities and broadcast on YouTube. Little like the Truman Show
I might proposition him if/when he tries this on me ->
"Do you speak English?"
"Ah, Sausdey Jamie! You know how famous you are getting? There's internet blogs and forum threads about you mate! Listen, how about this, I have a camera and could film your antics, produce 10 minute clips and we could broadcast them on the internet, wotdoyasay?"
**** you all ...!
This guy is actually Brad Pitt, dressed in disguise!
He's in town, with Matt Dillon and Angelina Jolly, making a new film about the vicissitudes of life in Phnom Penh, and then some.
You not only missed this fact, but you also didn't get his ***n' autograph... losers!
Learn to look past the smelly armpits and Anchor breath!
HDAH
Jolly? Typos aside, i just got hit by a possible theory, but i really hope its not true, but do any of u suppose that this junky jamie might hv had a hand in the bumper crop of beggar syndicatin' lately? fr all we know he's been organising them, etc.. not that i'm trying to stir smtg up..its just that i find it so odd how hes been able to survive fr so long doing the same thing added to the fact that there seems to b more n more beggars on the roads as well..
i doubt he has the smarts to be the head of a begging syndicate. he'd need to have his head together and not be strung out looking for his next hit.
i think he survives courtesy of the constant fresh turnover of naive, gullible, well-intentioned tourists. that and the fact that barangs can get away with alot in this town - hence the 'eating in a restaurant then saying he'll be back in 5 mins and doing a runner' routine.
