Anyone know a decent Khmer workman? Someone with (or who can borrow) a few tools?

Right now I have a steel security door that’s jammed open – needs to be planed by one of those things that shave steel.

But every other week there’s something else – a new doorlock to weld on, leaking taps, wonky light fittings...

The people I’ve tried so far have been unreliable, so any leads will be appreciated.

Incidentally, anyone who proves reliable will yield a lot of work in my street (Street 172, which has hundreds of residents), as I will tell my Khmer friends, who themselves can’t currently find anyone reliable.

Thanks a lot.

Sophal from Buzy Beez has done all the work I needed doing so far. He speaks English and has a go even when I am not sure what I want! At the moment we are designing a cat/dog flap for my mosquito door, I had no idea how to make one and Sophal was very good at designing something, he is going to be building it next week. his number is 012755913

I have heard good things about buzy bees,I hope it works out.
Finding khmer workmen with a good work ethic and pride in their work is not easy.
Never easy in australia either.
Dont think that they will plain the edge off the steel door, maybe use a belt sander or spring the hinges.

Get the landlord to do it. If he/she won't, then find a handy man, and deduct the cost plus your time (say $50/hour)to PM, allow access, hang around, supervise and to find the handy dude, from your next rent payment.

Alternatively stop paying the rent until it gets done. Sticky door sounds like a landlord's problem unless you damaged it. Even if you did,the landlord will want to know who is doing the work.

There is an oversupply of rental accomodation at present. You have the whipping hand.

If the landlord is beligerrent tell him/her that you will start deducting 10% for rent tax. If they kick up a stink then threaten to report it all to the MOF.

You will be surprised how fast they move.

this part is definitely true ... i was surprised how little effort it took to find a flat this time round, and how cheap prices in general were, compared to about a year ago ...

Why don't you just walk to the nearest steel fabricating shop ! They are everywhere.

I can recommend Bizy Beez, call Sophal on 012 755 913, he's been working in people's homes and businesses for years here. He is Khmer/Australian, so there's not a problem with his English... providing you speak Aussie Laughing out loud

..because it is the landlord's problem and everytime you let somebody off the hook for something they are responsible for they think it is ok. The landlord needs to be taught that accountability comes along with profit.

What planet do you live one ? This is the most useless and stupid advice I have ever seen.Clearly you haven't been here long. You behave like this and you will get evicted pronto.

john,
have you asked your landlord to fix these things? I would not take Wal's approach as that will just make you seem like an arrogant barang and will yield you trouble but you might find they are quite happy to fix. If not, just pay for it yourself. It is cheap and not worth the hassle;

Try Dyna and Kim on 016633393. Father and son. English speaking.

Good luck with it.

...for all the advice - especially for the phone numbers.

I'll pick one of them & give them a call.

My landlord has agreed to pay for the repair.

Thanks again.
