6PM: EXHIBITION OPENING - Hannah Miles’ TRANSPARENCY was created to celebrate through art, the beauty and strength of transgender women. Furthermore the series is exploring the pain and magnificence of discovering yourself and coming out as a transgender woman in a diverse range of colors and symbols. She wanted to discuss what she sees, what others see and how transgender women may see themselves in her pieces. Through extensive research on Hinduism, Buddhism and Transgender people's roles in India and Cambodia these pieces were created and built upon layers of meanings through imageries, which are significant to both religious cultures.

Her work originally focused on the construction and control of gender and from that she found out that she wanted to understand what gender and sexuality were. She was inspired to artistically explore this topic after volunteering at a Transgender support group. From the transwomen she met, she was given backstage access to document several "Lady boy" shows, she has produced seven paintings and a series of photographs called "LED lights" which were created to defy socially constructed norms through unexpected use of colour. Hanna Miles was also inspired by Apsaras and Deities and their significance as well as the Hindu rituals of the hijra/ transgender people including their castration ceremony represented through floral. She has chosen flowers as the primary symbol as flowers are both sexes and the peony flowers represents masculinity in India, she also used feathers/birds to show freedom. The Artist tried to combine the symbols and people in her work, as if they were a part of the person. She used mixed media painting, flower pressing, photography and Photoshop to explore this topic. Through it she has become more aware of her own identity and has come to a deeper understanding of the spectrum of sexuality and gender.

8PM: SHORT DOCUMENTARIES - A deep transformation from tradition to modernism is taking place, which has many repercussions throughout Cambodian society as a whole. Transsexuals, or “ladyboys”, as they are often called, were traditionally tolerated as a third sex, but rarely truly accepted in Cambodian society. In the past, they have faced serious discrimination. As a result, they often grouped together and lived in a small parallel world, with their job options limited to beauty salons and the sex trade. Today, transsexuals in Cambodia are contributing to increasing openness towards them by living their identity more confidently. We invite you to watch a set of short documentaries on the topic, directed by Cambodian filmmakers: TWO LIVES, ONE HEART (2014, 19 min) and MY NAME IS UNTAC (2014, 13 min) by Hem Vanna; I CAN BE WHO I AM (2011, 21 min) by Chhoun Sarin. Sao Sopheak is showing the trailer for her new documentary SOMEWHERE UNDER THE RAINBOW about senior transgender activist Sou Sotheavy. Q&A with filmmaker and protagonists.
