Nearly 5,000 get food poisoning this year

The department also announced at the monthly meeting in Ha Noi that of those victims, 43 people died, 15 more than the same period last year.

"One hundred and six food poisoning incidents were reported nationwide, with each incident resulting in the poisoning of many," said Tran Dang, Head of FSHD. "In comparison with the same period last year, the quantity of food poisoning incidents reduced by 12, accounting for a 12.4 per cent reduction, however the number of people affected seems to be on the rise."

The mountainous area of the North saw the highest number of people die by food poisoning, accounting for 55.81 per cent of total fatal cases nation-wide.

The food poisoning incidents were mainly recorded in the mountainous area of the North with 31 incidents and the Cuu Long Delta River area with 23 incidents, followed by the Northern Delta region with 14.

South-eastern provinces recorded the highest number of poisoning victims, accounting for 51.9 per cent of the number of cases nation-wide. The mountainous area of the North saw the highest number of people die by food poisoning, accounting for 55.81 per cent of total fatal cases nation-wide.

"Shortcomings in food hygiene and safety in factory canteens in industrial zones or processing zones is why there is a sudden jump in the number of food poisoning victims having to go to the hospital in the South-eastern provinces," said Dang.

The mountainous provinces of the North and South-eastern provinces saw the highest number of people killed by food poisoning because people consumed poisonous mushrooms, corn cakes with mildewy toxins and unsafe and unhygienic wine, explained Dang.

The FSHD plans to strengthen its inspection and communication activities nation-wide, especially focusing on schools, factory canteens of industrial and processing zones and mountainous provinces. The Department also called on people to protect themselves from the damages of food poisoning
