Plan B, Live at The FCC Angkor

It's always good to have a plan B.

Just ask Peter Flierl, a.k.a. Sneaky Pete. When the Australian bass player's band, Del Webb Explosion, split up in the early 1980s, he put plan B into motion: he formed a new band that he fittingly named PLAN B.

"PLAN B quickly established itself as a force to be reckoned with," Flierl says.

The Adelaide-based group quickly became popular while playing "a very palatable form of hard-edged pop-influenced soul", he says.

"We were all pretty good lookin' back then . . . still are . . . although some have fared better than others," Flierl jokes.

The international music scene's presence will be felt in Cambodia in December when The FCC Phnom Penh hosts Brooklyn electronic music duo Ratatat and Brisbane indie-pop juggernaut I Heart Hiroshima.

"The bands are much into new experiences and audiences," says Australian Paul Curtis, the promoter for both bands on the Southeast Asian dates. "They are looking for unexplored territories."

For independent music fans, the announcement of the shows came as a minor shock. In the past, Phnom Penh has seldom played host to such live music hotshots.

DJ Illest: Hey, Mr. Deejay

Cambodia's DJ Illest, the driving force behind Phnom Penh's nascent hip-hip scene, plays an intimate, rooftop show at Chow on October 10

Cambodia can be desolate territory for a DJ.

There is not one single retailer of turntables anywhere in the country. There are no records stores, and thus no records. Even if there were, few Cambodians would be interested in listening to them.
