Come and watch free movies at Yeoksam Global Village Center!
The Yeoksam Global Village Center in Gangnam-gu district, Seoul, is featuring a new "Movie Day." Every first Friday of the month the Center plans to screen a selected movie. The movie will be shown at 11:00 a.m., 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium of Yeoksam 1 Culture Center. It's free of charge and visitors are also encouraged to bring along family and friends.
Starting August 1, the first film to be screened is Azur et Asmar (2006), a three-dimensional animation by French Director Michel Ocelot. Its storyline is inspired by folklore and has an exotic look, with art styles inspired by Africa and the Middle East.
On September 5, the film is the Korean Old Boy (2003) by director Park Chan-wook, about a man imprisoned in a hotel room for 15 years without explanation, seeking vengeance upon release. The film won the Grand Prix at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.
On October 10 it's a Hollywood blockbuster from a few years ago: The Butterfly Effect (2004) by Director Eric Bress & J.M. Gruber that analyzes the consequences of each choice one makes in life through the diary of a young man with a unique ability.
On Nov. 5 director Kim Ji-hoon's May 18 (2007), a "faction (blend of fact and fiction) movie" will take you back to the Democratization Movement in Gwangju on May 18, 1980, to tell the anger, sorrow, and in some cases death of the citizens who rose up against the military dictatorship.
On Dec. 5 it's Sen/Chihiro's Spiriting Away (2001), a Japanese animation by the famous director Hayao Miyazaki. In it a young girl falls into the world of wonder and makes friends with spirits, witches, monsters and other folklore creatures of traditional Japan.
To get to the Global Village Center, come out of exit 1 at Gangnam Station on Seoul Metro Line 2. Then walk straight for 200 meters toward Yeoksam Station, turn right at Kukkiwon intersection (Woori Bank Corner), keep walking for 400 meters and the center, a five-story blue building, will be on your left.
