For nine humid days (July 12-July 20), the downtown areas of Boryeong and Daecheon Beach are transformed into large mud recreational areas. Organized for the purpose of advertising Boryeong mud cosmetics which emit infrared rays and also to provide a fun festive atmosphere for the locals and visitors to mingle in mud, the Mud Festival is quite popular with the foreigners.
The festivities are slated to begin on July 12 (Sat) with an opening ceremony at 19:30 and fireworks 22:30 and will conclude on July 20 (Sun) with a closing ceremony and fireworks at 22:00. Bring your bathing suits and get ready for some messy fun as there are plenty of activities involving mud. Participants can join in on various recreational activities in the giant mud pool; take part in the mud photograph contest, mud body painting, and mud sliding, among others.
There are some sports with a muddy twist available as well, mud ssireum (Korean wrestling), softball tournament and mud soccer among others. One of the most popular and fun activities available is the "super mud slide" --- a giant inflatable slide (44m long and 12m high) is one way to release some stress and let loose.
Extracted from Daecheon Beach area, Boryeong mud is a high quality natural ocean mud. Boryeong mud is said to emit a healthy level of infrared rays, so the festival is not only a great way to have loads of fun but is also a good way to revitalize your skin and health.
