This summer, the academic world is drawn to Korea at the World Congress of Philosophy (WCP) 2008. Called the Olympics of Philosophy, the event, with more than 100 years of history, will bring in world-famous philosophers to Seoul National University from July 30 to Aug 5. The WCP 2008 aims to share ideas, friendship and cultures through the integration of Eastern and Western perspectives. The WCP 2008 is sponsored by the International Federation of Philosophical Societies and the Korean Philosophical Association. As a unique new feature to the WCP 2008, Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism are included for the first time in the WCP as independent philosophical sections. Don't miss the 2008 Sacheon International Percussion Festival, to be held on July 31---Aug 3 in lovely Sacheon-si, Gyeongsangan-do. Featuring 12 percussion groups from the U.S., India, Taiwan, Australia, Japan, Italy and more, this festival brings percussion enthusiasts from all over the world together for an exciting extravaganza. The performances will be top-notch, showcasing unique artists such as Australia's William Barton on the didgeridoo and China's Ji Yu-Chen on Chinese traditional instruments. In addition, visitors can view thousands of instruments from all over the world and participate in percussion workshops. For a fun time in the summer sun, take in the Busan Sea Festival on Aug 1---Aug 10. This festival is an eclectic, large umbrella event that links various performances and activities held at a number of Busan beaches, including Haeundae Beach and Gwangalli Beach. The Busan International Rock Festival, Busan International Beach Dance Festival, Busan International Hip-Hop Festival and the Busan International Magic Festival are all part of the big Sea Festival. While you're in Busan, check out the Busan International Rock Festival on Aug 2---Aug 3 at Daepo Beach. This free event features artists from Australia, U.S., Korea, Japan, England and Malaysia. The 9th annual event's slogan is "Sea, Youth and Love." It aims to bring together youth of this generation of all social classes and embrace a common love for music to the sea shore. Jason Mraz, who captivated his audiences during his premier concert in last March, will be coming to Korea for a perfomance at Melox Ax on Aug 1. The distinguished singer/songwriter is well-known as a magician of the words of love. His concert features pieces from his new album, "We Sing, We Dance. We Steal Things" and his various previous hit songs performed with a new full band. This new band adds trumpet, trombone, and saxophone to the existing bass, guitar, percussion, drum and keyboard lineup. His new album consists of 12 songs featuring powerful and enchanting pop melodies and witty lyrics. With more powerful music, Mraz promises to mesmerize audiences. Tickets are 77,000 won. The National Dance Company of Korea presents "Baribari Chomchom Didim Sae 2008" through Aug 14. "Baribari Chomchom Didim Sae" refers to little foot movements of beautiful traditional Korean dance. "Baribari Chomchom Didim Sae", which started in 2001, has a new style of program designed to modernize and popularize traditional Korean dance. Its first part features a dance performance and explanation on chosen dance topics. Based on this, the second part features original performances. "Baribari Chomchom Didim Sae 2008" also offers the audiences a chance to participate. After each performance, audiences are given an opportunity to have conversation with performers. This year, seven dance performances are showcased by seven young choreographers so that the audience can appreciate a variety of intriguing Korean dances and their different features.
