The trend, initiated by Apple's iPod, is creating a new market for makers as IT gadgets have become a fashion accessory. And, like a pair of running shoes, consumers seem to be tempted to possess more than one.
Samsung Electronics Co, one of the world's top makers of flat-screen televisions, mobile phones and electronic appliances, launched a tiny music player that they say looks like a pebble. Nicknamed 'the pebble player', the Yepp S2 is fun, easy to use, fashionable and cheap, the company said.
Available in black, white, red, green and purple and taking the shape of a rounded, polished stone, the Pebble has its controls on the back - but no LCD screen. A 1GB S2 player is priced at 49,000 won (US$47.41) and a 2GB device at 59,000 won ($57.09).
"Like a fashion item, the S2 is something that even those who already have an MP3 player would be tempted to buy," said Choi Young-gyu, an executive at Samsung's MP3 business team.
The firm aims to market it as "your second music player", while targeting those who seek simple and no-frills products.
Before Samsung, Reigncom, which sells MP3 players under the iRiver brand, captured the female and youth segments with its Mickey Mouse-inspired Mplayer. Even a local design house, INNO Design, has started making MP3 players.
Still, though, at the forefront of the trend is Apple, which suggests people wear its Shuffle as part of their outfit. The iPod shuffle, which can be clipped on one's sleeve, bag, or belt, can store up to 500 songs.
