Cambodian and Korean find love in Asia

July 4, 2010 by Diana Saw

I really like this Korean show called "Love in Asia". It is about foreigners who marry Koreans and their stories. There are more than 1 million foreigners in Korea, according to the "Love in Asia" website. One memorable episode was about a woman from Moldova (people in Korea all think she is from the Maldives) who married a Korean man and how she and her children live in Korea. Her older son found it difficult because his Korean classmates discriminated against him because he looks different.

More Siem Reap graffiti art

July 4, 2010 by Diana Saw

Almost 2 years ago I wrote about graffiti art appearing in Siem Reap. This was the first that I noticed. Since then, they have been popping up everywhere. I like the colours and think they brighten up the place. I have been trying to find them all. This one is on Sivatha, near the florist (there is only one).

My neighbour's wedding is killing me

April 8, 2010 by Diana Saw

I am cranky. I have had to get up at 6am for the last 2 days. My neighbour has a wedding.

In Cambodia weddings last for three days and start at 6am. Last night, the first day, celebrations lasted until 12:30am. It resumed at 6am today.

From the top - Angkor Wat, the Bakan

March 19, 2010 by Andy Brouwer

A look down the 50 steep steps leading to the Bakan at Angkor Wat

The top level of Angkor Wat, the Bakan, reopened in the middle of January. Last week was my first opportunity to go to the top since it closed back in October 2007. Regulations have been introduced to restrict numbers of tourists, as well as time limits and rules on dress, etc, so a visit is not like it was 'back in the day'. Nevertheless, it was pleasing to be able to look out once again across the treeline that surrounds the temple and then into the heat-haze on the western side, as you look back towards the entrance and the moat.

New Siem Reap Night Market shut down

January 25, 2010 by Diana Saw

I just got back to Siem Reap on Thursday. While in Phnom Penh I heard news that the new Siem Reap Night Market was shut down. We have 2 stalls there. At first, we were told the market would be shut for just three days and the explanation given was an important person from Phnom Penh was visiting and they did not want that person to know about the market.

There is a Chicken at my shop

January 2, 2010 by Diana Saw

Technically, it's a rooster

Technically, it's a rooster. I know because it has been crowing non-stop since it arrive on a motorcycle a couple of hours ago. So I shot it (geddit? hahaha!)

It's not the first time the cobbler who sits just outside the shop has brought a chicken along with him. He ties it to a pole (you can see the raffia string on the rooster's left leg in this photo) and takes it with him when he goes home.

The Feminine Mystique

December 31, 2009 by The FCC Cambodia

At home in the foothills of Bokor Mountain, French artist Vincent Broustet surveys the lush contours that surround his stilted wooden home.

Enveloped by bright green rice fields, a river and the sea, the choice of abode seems a natural fit for the 47-year-old Bordeaux native, who spent four years in the deserts of southern Morocco before moving to the jungles of Southeast Asia.

"Cambodia still retains what I like," he says. "It's rough, it's in the countryside mainly, and it's still totally off the roads of fashion and 'global influence'."

Plan B, Live at The FCC Angkor

December 31, 2009 by The FCC Cambodia

It's always good to have a plan B.

Just ask Peter Flierl, a.k.a. Sneaky Pete. When the Australian bass player's band, Del Webb Explosion, split up in the early 1980s, he put plan B into motion: he formed a new band that he fittingly named PLAN B.

"PLAN B quickly established itself as a force to be reckoned with," Flierl says.

The Adelaide-based group quickly became popular while playing "a very palatable form of hard-edged pop-influenced soul", he says.

"We were all pretty good lookin' back then . . . still are . . . although some have fared better than others," Flierl jokes.

Royal Angkor International Hospital vs Ly Srey Vina Clinic

December 30, 2009 by Diana Saw

I finally got to experience Siem Reap's notorious Royal Angkor International Hospital. I have heard so many stories from travellers and expats about outrageous fees (you can read one customer's experience here). One expat told me, for instance, the hospital often recommends patients do an MRI scan, whether necessary or not.

Hollywood stars support Siem Reap's Angkor Hospital for children

Anne Hathaway and Eva Longoria Parker were just two of the stars who attended a gala dinner for the benefit of Cambodia's Friends without a Border. The dinner was held on Dec 10, International Human Rights Day, at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. They were joined by Ali Larter, Diane Kruger, Kate Hudson and many others.

Friends without a Border was founded by Japanese photographer Kenro Izu and funds The Angkor Hospital for Children located in Siem Reap.
