History has many marvels up its sleeve. These marvels consist of traditions, monuments, culture and customs. Myanmar people too have been bestowed with numerous customs and traditions by their ancestors. Puppet art is one such tradition which was very famous in 17th and 18th century. During that time, puppets were not only used for entertainment purposes but also as a communication medium for the rural population. Puppeteers were nothing short of national heroes serving a public cause.

Just like British people love tea drinking, we Burmese people also have a penchant for tea. Teashops are an important and integral part of life in Myanmar.

As a foreigner who first arrives to Myanmar, you will be surprised to see so many teashops in Yangon and almost everywhere in Myanmar. The streets are filled with numerous tea-shops. And surprisingly, most of them are filled up with customers.

The Magic of Myanmar- Inle Lake

(Continued from last week- Part 4 Trekking into 2010)

It wasn’t a particularly arduous walk that we faced on our second day of trekking, but having set off at 8am it was with joy that our guide Saw’s words “not far now” were met, four hours later.

A boat was waiting for us at Inde ready to take us to Nyaungshwe where we would be staying during our Inle Lake experience. After so much land it was wonderful to see water!

Market day in Kalaw

(Continued from last week- Part 3 Boats, Bicycles and Balloons in Bagan)

It’s difficult to top hot air ballooning as a mode of transport, after our experience in Bagan I envisioned car and bus trips as a thing of that past. Why deal with insane drivers and potholes when you can jump into a basket and be whisked away in a balloon? Birds never seem to suffer road rage or queues of bumper-to-bumper beaks.

Super early wake-up calls result in most of the morning resembling an out-of-focus film, and this one was no different. By the time I was able to concentrate I realized that it was dark and cold, and we were sitting on a boat staring at a TV screen playing back-to-back music videos by Boney M. I never remembered them as being such activists, and exactly how ‘far out’ their wardrobes were.

(Continued from last week, The Magic of Myanmar Part 1)

I’m not sure if it was the suitcase crashing down on my head, or the cold and hunger on the train that did it, but when we arrived at our hotel in Mandalay, the Emerald land Inn, it did indeed feel like we had walked into a giant gem. The room was spacious, comfortable and had a bath. Sold.

It was a decision based on avoidance. An avoidance of two things: Christmas and Cambodia. The idea of another December 25th with fake snow and Happy Merry Christmas written on every available surface while you felt your skin being fried under the relentless Cambodian sun was enough to prompt the quest for a location far, far away from sweaty Santas. After a bit of geographical and financial arithmetic Myanmar presented itself.

Barcamp Burma 2010 - Friday, 22 to Monday 25 January 2010

What is a Barcamp?
Barcamp is a technology sharing event where anyone can participate freely and openly. It is a community activity based on collaboration and knowledge sharing, which has become a trend in Web 2.0 era, that is striving to reduce the knowledge gap between peers and between professionals and non-professionals. It is not an event where the rest of you have to listen to one person talking, but an event where you will be able to express yourself in topics concerning related fields, and therefore, will be able to meet and talk with many people. It is not like a seminar, where the direction goes from one to many, but will be going from many to many.

Fifty Feared Dead in Burma Ferry Collision

November 20, 2009 by The Burma Daily

At least 50 people are believed to have drowned in Burma when a wooden ferry packed with 178 people collided with a tugboat on a river in the southern Irrawaddy delta region, officials said on Tuesday. Thirty-one bodies were found after the single- deck ferry collided with a tugboat pulling a barge late on Sunday in the Ngawun river, and 21 people were missing, officials said. “There is very little chance of finding those missing alive. Most of them are women and children,” said an official in Pathein, capital of Irrawaddy, about 193 km west of the main commercial hub of Rangoon.
