September 7, 2010 by Kent Davis

Heng Sophady was shocked to see Cambodian prehistoric site destroyed, apparently for temporary housing

A 2500 year old archaeological site was unexpectedly destroyed in Cambodia last week. An archaeologist who rushed to the scene was shocked to discover heavy equipment still leveling the land, apparently to create temporary housing for a nearby company.

The Law, Rules, and Common Sense

September 6, 2010 by Norbert Klein

The Mirror, Vol. 14, No. 680

Some readers of The Mirror said that there was too much published related to the state of law. True, matters relating to the role of the law in Cambodia have received quite some attention. And this did not only happen when dealing directly with legislation and legal reforms, which are on the agenda of the government. Also related to such complex and difficult problems like the Temple of Preah Vihear as a World Heritage Site, and at a place in a region where both Cambodia and Thailand have taken different positions. Not emotions, but referring to what has been written – even when it is interpreted differently – will be crucial reference on the way to solutions.

Sundown Sessions: DJs Marco and lllest present "7-Eleven," an early-hours "before" party on the fifth-floor sundeck of The Quay Hotel.

September 6, 2010 by FCC Cambodia

On the fifth-story sundeck of The Quay Hotel, canopy-covered Moroccan lounge beds peer across the Tonle Sap River and to The Mekong River beyond. A cool breeze blows in from the water and washes over the bubbling black-stone hot tub.

When Phnom Penh's DJ Marco first saw the place six months ago, he knew he had found the venue for a perfect sunset affair. So along with his cousin, another local spinster who goes by the name DJ Illest, the two approached Benjamin Le Grand, a manager at the hotel, and gave him the pitch.

Travelin' Band

September 6, 2010 by FCC Cambodia

I was just a lad, nearly twenty-two
Neither good nor bad, just a kid like you
And now I'm lost, too late to pray
Lord, I've paid the cost on the Lost Highway

So goes the song "Lost Highway," made popular by the late country-and-western star Hank Williams. The name seems fitting for a classic rock band based in Sihanoukville, the beach-town escape at the end of Highway 4.

Does Cambodia Benefit from Being a Member of the United Nations?

September 6, 2010 by Norbert Klein

The Mirror, Vol. 14, No. 680

In a Comment to a previous report in The Mirror, the question was asked:

Why do we have to bank on the UN? aren’t they an international political entity? Do we really benefit from their philosophy?

Thanks for raising the question – I appreciate if we can enter into discussions on The Mirror – I try to respond. But I am not sure how to understand your comment – maybe you can further clarify? And other readers are of course also welcome to join.

Belle and her dance crew

September 4, 2010 by Andy Brouwer

I must doff my hat to the Chinese House in Phnom Penh who will host Cambodia's favourite contemporary dancer, Belle and her own dance crew, Silver Bell, for a night of new creations and innovations steeped in their upbringing in classical Khmer dance.

The Mirror, Vol. 14, No. 680

As the Constitution of the Kingdom of Cambodia says, the “Cambodian people are the masters of their own country.” And in its Article 51, the Constitution, written in 1993 by the elected representatives forming the first National Assembly, who then established the Kingdom of Cambodia, were setting high goals for the future: “to restore Cambodia into an ‘Island of Peace’ based on a multi-party liberal democratic regime guaranteeing human rights and the respect of law, and responsible for the destiny of the nation.”

Archaeologists at Angkor: Photographic Archives from EFEO - by Denise Heywood (Asian Art Newspaper, September 2010)

The sight of ancient ruins emerging from the jungle has always captured the imagination. When recorded in early black and white photographs these images, swathed in mystery, are even more evocative and nowhere more so than in the jungles of Cambodia at Angkor.
