September 9, 2009 by Kelly Frances McKenna

Many a curious traveller has passed through the crowded alleys of the infamous Soi Cowboy (or Cowboy Road) for a taste of Southeast Asia’s most notorious street. No visit to Bangkok is complete without a tour of the ‘Soi’. So just what makes this particular little road worthy of its bold rep?

Located between Sukhumvit Soi 21 (also called Soi Asoke) and Soi 23, Soi cowboy is a surprisingly small street of about 45 bustling bars, and is located within walking distance from the Sheraton and the Millennium Hilton.

Tourists warned of Thailand airport scam

July 21, 2009 by Jonathan Head

Bangkok's showcase new international airport is no stranger to controversy.

Built between 2002 and 2006, under the governments of then-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, the opening date was repeatedly delayed.

It has been dogged by allegations of corruption, as well as criticism of the design and poor quality of construction.

Then, at the end of last year, the airport was shut down for a week after being occupied by anti-government protesters.

I have a good idea. How about go to Thailand, go to an American style luxury shopping mall, and then eat some Japanese hamburgers? That is exactly what I did when I went to the Japanese burger chain Mos Burger in the Siam Paragon shopping center.

Back in San Francisco, living across the street from a Thai restaurant, eating Thai food more than once a week was completely out of the question. Fast forward 3 months and I live in Bangkok and eating Thai food is a daily occurrence. Sometimes Thai food is on the menu multiple times per day.

Bangkok Supermarket Price Watch - 6th and 7th June, 2009

June 14, 2009 by Life In Bangkok

This week’s trip to TOPS Bangna and Villa Thong Lo.

We had some stuff to do at Central Bangna so we did some of our weekly shopping at the TOPS supermarket there.

They renovated the place with a view to attracting more of the growing expat community in that neck of the woods, and now stock more items that will appeal to expats. However, they neglect to stock the shelves in an expat friendly fashion - all the facing labels were in Thai so if you don’t read Thai you would be turning every item (brand) to find the one you are looking for, eg the Nautilus Tuna in brine.

On The Ground In Bangkok, Decisions, Decisions

June 14, 2009 by Brown In Bangkok

I have purposely left Part 3 of “On The Ground In Bangkok” until now, to say what I’ve decided. This is the perfect time to post this story, as this weekend marks the one year anniversary of my journey across the Pacific to begin my vacation in Bangkok, prior to my consulting trip to Dhaka. It was also one year ago this weekend that I wandered into Mojos for the first time. It was a weekend that would be a turning point in the last chapter of my life journey.
