Hotel Manolis

March 8, 2010 by Andy Brouwer

A view of the front facade of Hotel Manolis in Post Office square, Phnom Penh

I was looking through some photos from my visit with the Heritage Mission last year to look around some of the colonial French buildings still standing in Phnom Penh when I realised that I hadn't posted a few pictures of the old Hotel Manolis that stands opposite the Post Office and is now home to many families, who've converted the old hotel suites into homes. The Manolis Hotel was constructed in 1910 and looks out onto the Post Office square.

Phnom Penh by the Glass

March 1, 2010 by Darren Gall

Rubies Wine Bar -

I tend to navigate my way around Phnom Penh by my favourite glasses of wine -not a simple matter of where I can get a decent glass at a reasonable price mind you- but places where I can take refuge from the chaos .
These establishments have to be places that have a certain atmosphere, an ambiance that I warm to, places that make me thank the gods that I am alive and well and living in Cambodia, where the food is as good as the food choices and the wines are plentiful and generally inexpensive.

Guitar Gypsy

February 2, 2010 by FCC Cambodia

Singer-songwriter Emmanuel Groult, a.k.a. Monsieur Nû, brings a world of music to the FCC.

Growing up bouncing around the Middle East, French-born guitarist Emmanuel Groult found little time for music.

Life was far too adventurous.

"I have some really amazing memories of Egypt," he says. "Once, my father, my uncle, some friends and I climbed one of the pyramids at Gizeh at 3 a.m. to watch the sun rise over Old Cairo. It's one of the greatest experiences of my life."

A Truckful of Soul

February 2, 2010 by FCC Cambodia

Australian bluesrock veteran Paul Janovskis -- known for soulful lyrics and stripped-down guitar licks -- plays Phnom Penh in February.

As a 12-year-old boy growing up in Melbourne, Paul Janovskis wanted not only to be a musician, he wanted to be a rebel in the greatest traditions of rock 'n' roll.

It was at that unruly age that Janovskis, who performs at the FCC on Feb. 19-20, picked up one of his dad's guitars and started playing regularly. At the same time, he hooked up with some musically inclined neighbors -- including Nick Seymour from Crowded House -- and began playing in "party bands".

The Yumi effect

There has been a certain buzz in the air, one that has been in circulation for a while now. In the eye of this flurry of excitement is a Londoner, a Japanese style eatery and the Cambodian capital.

I have seen smiles spread across faces like wildfire at the mention of the name Yumi and overheard highly animated conversations dance around it too. In a city that has a substantial number of eating venues – this is saying something.

2009 A Year in Wine

January 7, 2010 by Darren Gall

As the year draws to a close and we look to the promise and uncertainty of the new we celebrate, and we celebrate and then we celebrate some more. We celebrate many things at this time of year but I tend to think that, for most of us, it is life itself we are celebrating. On the cusp of the span between one year and another, for a few short weeks, we can live in the moment, pausing to rejoice in the simple yet miraculous fact that we are alive.

Girl walks into a restaurant...

December 2, 2009 by Tanja Wessels

the theme is ever present

“What are you going to eat!?” are the words that somersaulted from my flatmates mouth, closely followed by a bemused/incredulous expression when I told her that I was going to be writing a review of Fish Restaurant this week.

A bit of background is necessary at this point in time, for what I was telling her was hardly an uncommon exchange between people. Her aerobic facial response was however, not unfounded.

I am my own lab rat and inspired by my surroundings I recently blurted out a desire to abandon meat for an entire year while sitting at a vegan restaurant with friends.
