Book review - Match Fixer

March 11, 2010 by Andy Brouwer

Neil Humphrey's debut novel, Match Fixer.

Yes I know its a football-related post but it's also a book-related post, so I've posted it here too. If you have any interest in Asian football at all, you must get a copy of Neil Humphrey's debut novel, Match Fixer. Even if you can't stand football - yes there are some people like that out there - but fancy a really good read immersed in the exotic Far East then Match Fixer will provide that too. Just treat the football as incidental.

International Women’s Day 2010 – a Lot to Think About

March 10, 2010 by Norbert Klein

The Mirror, Vol. 14, No. 655

In former years, The Mirror carried references and reflections about the International Women’s Day – its early history as a day of public celebration in 1911, but also its prehistory in 1834; which surprisingly enough relates to a strike of women working in the textile industry in Lowell – the city of Lowell in Massachusetts in the USA, which is now a center of Cambodian immigrants in the USA, while female textile workers play an important role for the national economy of Cambodia; but also considerations in 2008 and 2009 about the important role of this day in Cambodia at present.

March 9, 2010 by Andy Brouwer

The Army win the Hun Sen Cup for the 1st time beating Phnom Penh Crown 3-2

No-one can deny that the football served up by the Hun Sen Cup competition this season didn't produce excitement, entertainment, suspense and goals galore, as well as yellow and red cards sprinkled around like confetti. And today's cup final was no exception.

Luxury cruising - The Jayavarman luxury cruise ship

March 9, 2010 by Andy Brouwer

The Bao Dai suite stateroom, one of two suites on-board

The Jayavarman luxury cruise ship was in port today so I decided on a visit to give it the once over in comparison to the other cruise ships on offer between Saigon and Phnom Penh and beyond. It compares very favourably with the larger RV La Marguerite, which plies the same route and which has 46 cabins compared to the Jayavarman's 26, which includes two state rooms. Named after the great Khmer king of the 12th century, each of its cabin has a balcony, good cabin space, nice sized bathrooms, air-con and all mod cons, except tv's.

Why Do They Not Simply Compare the Maps Publicly? A Question to Both Sides

March 9, 2010 by Norbert Klein

The Mirror, Vol. 14, No. 654

Apologies for the delay – there was no Internet connection available the day before. – Norbert Klein

After France had established its colonial presence in a region which was then known as “Indochina” – Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam – the governments of France and of Siam – since 1932 called Thailand – started to exchange opinions about how to clearly defining a borderline between the territories under French and under Thai control, where no borderline had been defined before. For a certain region, without much population and remote from all political centers, they agreed that the border should follow the watershed.
