When people question the value of Susan Marino's work, she tells the story of a 2-year-old boy she cared for many years ago when she was still a young nurse. Sean had spina bifida and had already endured 10 surgeries, including a tracheotomy and a colostomy. He was paralyzed and his misshapen spine was crushing his lungs.

"One day while we were eating breakfast I said, 'Poor Sean. He will never be able to do the things so many other children can.' Before I even had the words out of my mouth his mother looked at me with daggers in her eyes.

The Mirror, Vol. 14, No. 650

The Mirror carried already last week a report about the extraordinary speech of the Prime Minister: “It Is Time to Stop; Military Officials Who Do Illegal Activities Are Not Fit to Work in the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces” – where he directly named several generals present, criticizing their unacceptable, corrupt behavior. During the present week, there were still positive responses in the press, including from sources not so close to the government. Human Rights Watch, a US based organization, often very critical of the political climate in Cambodia, also supported the Prime Minister’s warning to commanders over their corrupt, illegal actions. And the Prime Minister himself continued to speak according to the same line, when he attacked nepotism, warning that nobody should nominate relatives and partisans for public office.

But we got also another response: “Words are cheap, nothing will change.”

February 4, 2010 by Phnom Penh Gigs

It was the last Thursday in January, and the last date of the Blue Cheese and Bacon Burger Hellhounds 2010 Tour of Sharky Bar. And the playing was of a highest uber-ian quality, and the audience was keen and engaged, and the Mythical Dude was standing up, and Bong Thom was having out of body experiences, and the Swedish Ambassador was grooving it up, and Jimmy Hellhound was howling and cussing and there may or may not have been some cowbell, and there was certainly some awesome harmonising, like a bunch of old country folk sitting around on someone's porch with big clay bottles of homemade cider ... and they saw that it was good.

We bring, however, references to a hotly contested issue from these days.

Guitar Gypsy

February 2, 2010 by FCC Cambodia

Singer-songwriter Emmanuel Groult, a.k.a. Monsieur Nû, brings a world of music to the FCC.

Growing up bouncing around the Middle East, French-born guitarist Emmanuel Groult found little time for music.

Life was far too adventurous.

"I have some really amazing memories of Egypt," he says. "Once, my father, my uncle, some friends and I climbed one of the pyramids at Gizeh at 3 a.m. to watch the sun rise over Old Cairo. It's one of the greatest experiences of my life."
