Singapore Flyer traps thrill-riders for six hours

173 thrill riders on Singapore’s giant Ferris Wheel got a longer ride than they bargained for when fire in the control room trapped revellers in the wheel for some six hours on Tuesday night.

Ten of the passengers were lowered by rope from the Singapore Flyer before technicians were able to repair the damages and reopen the wheel.? Most passengers disembarked normally at around 11pm.

Rescuers were able to get food and liquids to the passengers trapped inside the capsules of the world’s largest Ferris Wheel.

The ten passengers who were lowered by rope were strapped into harnesses, which rescuers had brought with them after very carefully climbing the Singapore Flyer’s spokes to reach the capsules.

No one was badly injured though two of the passengers were hospitalised with minor ailments, one was a 70-year-old woman who suffered from dizziness and another ten-year-old boy who vomited.

Since opening in February this year the Singapore Flyer has stalled twice for around an hour each time, but this is the first time something like this has occurred.
A normal ride takes 30 minutes on the 165 metre tall construction.
