Has anybody heard of the latest new wave of assaults on westerners, by throwing bricks from moving SUV? Apparently there have been a number of these random attacks along the Riverfront and surrounding areas, both day and night and unprovoked.

It had better be a very fast moving SUV or it makes a very big target for someone with a good arm. .

Warhorse, you have got to be taking the piss. Throwing bricks? From a car at random people?
I find this one hard to believe mate.

Have a try at throwing anything from a car - the randomness may be due to them trying to hit anyone and an expat just happening to be there . River front - full of expats and tourists.

Has anyone ever seen a khmer who could throw or catch?
There are little girls in australia who can throw, catch and kick a ball better than almost any khmer man.

Last week a friend entered a karaoke bar (which i was dominating with some silky tunes) concussed dazed and bleeding because some F^wit in a SUV had pinged him with a brick.

So yes the rumors are true.

It will continue until the dude is caught by a group of drunken male expats and beaten to a pulp.

so ML, are you saying that there are possibly many more attacks that may have happened if their aim was better?

Did not have much faith in this one until I read it in the Post today (page 4 even)
It seems that some of the victims are ex post scribblers or freelancers from the post - does that mean anything or am I just jumping to conclusions?

Hotdamn! The little girls in australia must be built like bricksh!t-houses! I play football every week with khmers and they're pretty good at throwing, catching and kicking.
(Goalies doing the catching and throwing). 50% of my male staff members all are good at football.

All Australians generalize and exaggerate all the time.

As for the brick thowing...no one has happened to get a plate number?
At times like these I really miss my guns.

the car speeds off and they go to hospital.

I admit that on many occasions I have felt the urge to throw a brick at those groups of smelly, dreadlocked backpackers in fisherman's trousers but I think targeting expats is just wrong.

I just read the Post article.

It seems there is a possibility that the attacks were targeted as some of the people who were hit happened to be journalists or freelancers from the Post.

Maybe they pissed off the wrong person?

The Post does have a habit of misquoting, using incorrect or not clarified data and attributing comments to the wrong people (most famously HE Deputy Prime Minister Sok An in their education supplement).

They also make more spelling mistakes than I do on an average day.

Could very well be a pattern there Rigger. It is not like its the first time that journalist are targets here.

Hang on abaddon.
You are talking of that silly soccer game.
Surely only one player in the team is allowed to throw and catch.
That is one player out of eleven.
And kicking that round ball is easy,Im talking of real football here.
That silly round ball game is only played by poofters, wogs and sheilas.
But that was world cup was memorable wasnt it?
Remember that incredible final and that other stupendous couple of games ....
Actually no,it was all shite wasnt it?
None of the multi million dollar stars shined, hardly a gifted new player poppped up.
Those kiwis who were worth about two bob played nearly as well as the spoilt superstars.
And of course the officiating was a joke, might as well as let the cambodians run the tournament.
The diving was outstanding though, wasnt it?

This has (apparantly) been happening a lot lately. I know one victim personally, he was pelted hard in the back of the head from a black truck on riverside. This would have been two weeks back.

He's not a journalist, and it seems this truck is involved in all these stories.

Wow, ML, If I didn't know better I would have thought you were American.
Haven't met many anti-soccer ozzies. When the ball goes out of bounds, there is a throw-in. So it is more like 6 out of 11 throw the ball. (though you do have a point about a good number of them throw like girls).

The world cup was a bit pathetic this year. Both France and Oz were awful. And the diving and the refs were terrible (and the balls were stupid)...the damn plastic horns were aweful. FIFA needs to make some big changes. The should give all divers red cards. Most of the Italian team would be benched.

btw. do you realize that wog in S. Africa and UK is an offensive term for a black person? Or you are you good buddies with L. Ron Hubbard? (They use the term "wog" to mean a person who isn't a scientologist). Either you're a racist or a scientologist or wog means something different in Oz.

From the Post

JAMES Grant didn’t see it coming. Literally. As he was walking in Daun Penh district with some friends one night last month, a chunk of rock “about the size of my fist” struck him in the back of the head, causing him to black out for a few seconds.

“It was me and three girls walking along the riverside. We were just talking, and all of a sudden something hit me in the back of the head,” he said. “It felt like someone just punched me.”

He said one of the girls saw that the rock had been thrown from “a gold 4x4 Lexus”.

“Because we were walking in a line, it bounced off my head, hit my friend’s stomach and then came across my other friend’s foot,” he said of the attack, which occurred on June 16.

“I went to bed, and woke up at 6 in the morning and was really violently sick. I had a killer migraine. It must’ve been some sort of concussion.”

Eight such attacks have been reported to the Post since April, all of them taking place along the riverfront. In each case, an expatriate claims to have been hit by a brick or a piece of rock thrown from an SUV or a truck.

“I heard through a friend that there were around seven or eight people [attacked] recently,” said Grant, a freelance photographer who occasionally contributes to the Post. He added that his assistant had recently dodged a brick attack near Kandal Market that was attempted in broad daylight.
Jess Truglia, a British national living in Phnom Penh, said she was attacked in a similar fashion in late May.

“I was leaving Metro to go to Riverhouse,” she said. “I began to cross the road and a car turned down, and a brick hit me in the back.”

She noted that the vehicle was a pickup truck, and that the projectile was actually “half a brick”.

“A friend of mine that it [also] happened to was at a cashpoint, and it definitely came from a car,” she said.

Neither Grant nor Truglia reported the incidents to police.

But Patrick Falby, a former Post reporter, said he went to police soon after being attacked July 13 on Street 178.

“A silver SUV, a Toyota I think, slowed down and I was hit in the jaw with a brick,” he said. “I reported it to police, they told me to write down exactly what happened, and I said, ‘This is happening a lot, so I’d be happy to pass on a few details.’ They said they’d look into it and get back to me, but they haven’t.”

Sok Chhorn, the police chief in Chey Chumneah commune, said police were still investigating Falby’s case.

“This has never happened before,” he said, and added: “We care very much about tourists’ security.”

He said bricks had reportedly also been thrown into houses in the area, and advised victims to report all such incidents to authorities.

“Please tell tourists who have been injured not to worry about this case – the police are working on it,” he said.

But Hun Sothy, the police chief in Daun Penh district, said he did not believe the victims’ accounts because he had yet to receive any reports detailing their cases. “I deploy police officers along the street at night to protect tourists, so I don’t think they have happened,” he said. “If there is a victim, they should file a complaint to a police official that is close to them.”

Chris Chipp, an independent security consultant, said no one he’d talked to had heard of any brick attacks, but urged foreign victims to report them to their embassies.

“The embassies can put the screws to the authorities and say, ‘Hey, this is happening to our people, what are you doing and what can be done about it?’” Chipp said.

I would be curious to know where on the riverfront these attacks took place. Are they all in the same block or are they spread out along the whole river front?

That poofters, wogs and sheilas was the title of a book by the now deceased johnny warren.
Most aussies hate the round ball game although the A league is popular.
Sounds like the brick thing is true and more than one car involved.

Mate I dont put out rumors, only facts. Now the Cambodian daily is all over it and there is nothing from the post. But let me tell you, there are not any coppers out there. Unless they are in plain clothes and I find that hard to believe and if they were out there, they have no fuel money for the moto to give pursuit. Smile

Ok does this site have moderators?
If so how are you letting directly discriminatory and offensive language like this get through?

Also in terms of the article in the post, the daytime attack on James Grant's assistant actually refers to my girlfriend.
It was at 11.30 at night not "in broad daylight" She was also a witness to the attack when he got hit in the head and she was positive the car was the same "Silver" car as the one that had priviosly tried to hit us.
Also they had been taking photos at RiverHouse so it is "possible" that it was a directed attack on the ex-pat media.

Yes bricks come out of windows.
The majority of these stories refer to a silver pick up truck.
The one that was tried to hit me was a Toyota Hilux.

Corner of street 144 and riverside.

Why is it then if there has been such a multitude of attacks with vehicle descriptions that the coppers say that they have only received one complaint? Sure there is a good possibility that the coppers will do nothing but they cannot fix it if they dont know its broken and the respective embassies cannot approach the police if they dont know about it. So report it!

As Warhorse advised, please report ALL crime to your Embassy or Representative Embassy. It not only assists in the local reporting/information/statistics sharing amongst fellow Embassy networks, it can and does prompt action between your Embassy (or rep Embassy) and the local police (for what good their useless ar$e$ are). It also draws focus about these types of crimes - THOSE TARGETED AT FOREIGNERS (as I was advised by my Embassy that this is done more often than not) - and MAY PREVENT THE NEXT ONE HAPPENING TO SOMEONE ELSE.
Please think beyond and outside of yourself and your own experience (I know this is difficult if you've been in such an unfortunate situation, as I have: afterwards you're likely shocked, traumatised, disappointed, or maybe even you're somewhat embarrased as you might have been out on the town later than expected or had too much to drink, so somewhere, deep down, may think well, I should've known better). BUT........ FOR THE SAKE OF THE (LIKELY) NEXT PERSON THAT THIS TYPE OF CRIME WILL HAPPEN TO, please do YOUR bit and notify your Embassy ASAP - preferably the next day when the matter's "hot", that way they'll get the info out and around to the other Embassies and it will permeate the networks where it needs to be seen, realised, actioned for what it is (yes, as ANOTHER target against foreigners by some greedy thugs who are very willing to retribute or take from another (be it by knife or gun point) from many of us foreigners (and locals alike) who are in Cambodia doing something productive, worthwhile, kindred for this bloody country. And often end up injured be it physical or emotionally traumatised by the experience (as happened last month in a knifing I heard about - and as happened to me in both of my experiences of being violently mugged).
You wouldn't want it to happen to your sister, mother, wife, girlfriend, cousin, daughter, SO PLEASE REPORT IT TO TRY AND HELP STOP THIS FROM HAPPENING TO ANOTHER WOMAN.

Check out some of these previous posts about reporting crime and about how quickly crime occurs in this town:

And the attacks continue, without any relief insight from most friendly hosts. No increase in police presence, just the usual rhetoric from from the Phnom Penh police in the papers to give that warm and fuzzy feeling.

Have really enjoyed this thread guys. .thanks for the laughs.

Just to throw my two cents worth in. I am a wog. For the record, in Australia it generally refers to someone of european descent (usually italy or greece). And for the most part it's not offensive at all depending on the context. So i'm fairly certain any confusion with the South African term was pretty much accidental. But good on people for pointing out racism is bad. and also for the record, i agree. racism = bad.

but then, where i come from, wishing that people might be the next to be hit by a brick aint great form either... but hey, maybe that's just me.

i'm no lifer, hell, i only did a year in PP, and i'm certainly not gonna question whether people are actually getting hit by bricks, but i'm definitely curious to know who everyone thinks is doing it? in my experience, most khmer would either a) not lift a finger against you or b) shoot you. there's not a whole lot in between.

(Altho once, while i was out jogging, i did get punched in the face. but hey, i was jogging on a hot day so pretty much deserved it i reckon.)

if there weren't so many people on here saying they know someone it happened to, i'd be inclined to think it was westerners who'd knocked back a few too many Angkors and Happy Pizzas and woken up FEELING like they'd been hit by a brick - which is certainly a fairly common occurrence. but again, what would i know?

i can only imagine these attacks must all happen quite late at night tho, cause if it was during the day, i'm pretty sure brick or not, you'd be able to catch up to the clack/silver/gold car/truck/pick up and return the brick as they made their 2km/hr get away in traffic...

The last time there was a spate of rock throwing/use of a slingshot a few years ago, a guy lost an eye. If I remember correctly, nobody was ever caught that time and I am not holding my breath this time; I think the police a) don't give a sh*t and b) know exactly who is behind the attacks.

"just the usual rhetoric from from the Phnom Penh police in the papers to give that warm and fuzzy feeling."

Does anyone believe a single word any of the authorities utter these days? It's the same with the assurances to the NGOs and donors. Feed them a load of feel-good shit, and then just continue to plunder and pillage as usual. And they keep on falling for it.
