I;ve read that Europcar was to come to PP in April 2010, but can't find them anywhere online. I find that while Lyna rental car is nice, their prices are a bit high at $30 a day for an older Camry. I just came back from Bali, where you can rent a small Suzuki jeep for $13 per day insured.

this is not bali.
cars are not cheap and insurance is not cheap for obvious reasons.
if you cant afford $35 a day then get a bicycle.

"insurance is not cheap for obvious reasons."

Such as lack of competition, high barrier to entry (red tape and bribes), or is it the astonishing high value placed on life here? What is it now, $1000 per body?

In town, most accidents are not going to damage more than the bodywork. Of course, for flash new motors that's going to be pricey, but for an old beater it should be peanuts, especially given the low cost of metal bashing here.

Motors are a racket anywhere, but they've got it laying golden eggs here. Fair enough f the proceeds were funding improvements in the nation.

Plenty of competition in the insurance business.
I dont know if youve noticed but risks are high.
I comprehensively insured a new moto last week-$135.
A ten year old pickup with no theft or damage to ones own vehicle-about $240.
Comprehensive on a pajero-about $350.
If a bong kills someone they can get away with $500.
A case in the paper this morning of a non bong killing someone-the victims family wants $5000.
For a barang-the sky is probably the limit.
Panel beating or knocking costs-cheap.
But try to get a replacement panel for some cars-maybe have to come from the states or europe.
Two air bags go off-$800 or more.
Personal injury costs?
A night in intensive care at royal rattanak-$1200.
Imagine the surgery costs.
Medivac-probably $20,000 each.
Then there are the new road tax costs-pajero $300,cruiser up to $500.
No wonder there are few hire car companies here, particulary self drive.
Can you imagine someone getting off a plane and into the rental car-preposterous.
