If you have O negative blood type and are in an accident in Phnom Penh, chances are you will have a hard time being matched. We are universal donors but can only accept O- blood. But O- is only 7% of the population worldwide, and it is not readily available here.
It's pessimistic to think about it, but we have all seen too many traffic accidents to ignore the reality that it can happen at any time.
I have O-, I live in Phnom Penh, and I'm willing to give if someone needs it. If you would like to join a network of type O- people who can be contacted in case of emergency to give this blood type, please email me at enroute8 [at] gmail [dot] com and we'll create a network of contacts - just in case.
Unfortunately, you might need to call on this network yourself some day, so take a moment to send me a note if you are O-.
Thanks.

(PS - For the those who like to write negative, critical comments in response to innocuous posts EA, please don't bother.)
enroute08 We have added this as an announcement which means it will stay at the top of the list as does the insulin topic.
Im O+. You can contact me if you ever need me, no problem donating blood. Last time i did was 8 months ago, i think.....
inazioz [at] yahoo [dot] es
But hopefully you wont need me......
Overall O blood is about 40% of the world
Can't you receive O+?
Carts, if your blood type is O-, you can donate to any person, but can only receive O- blood yourself. O+ isn't good for you.
See attached table for more info if you're interested, or of course the mostly factual Wikipedia.

Hi,
I'm O- also but I'm not sure I can give my blood to other person! I've been living in England in the years 96 when the illness with the cows (in french "vache folle") started. One day, I wanted to give my blood but they refuse it because they couldn't check if I had the illness or not. The incubation can be long but now, it's more than 10 years! They said that they didn't want to take any risk (not like hepatite C). What do you think?
My son is O+ so he might need some blood as well (hope not...).
Thanks
Barbara
I wish I knew my blood Type, I think its O but not sure (-or+) where can I find out?
Willing to help out where needed.

Next time, when you go to doctor, just ask them to take blood test to find out your blood type. It is usually part of the "basic set" they take.
What is the criteria for giving blood here?
Do they check donors blood first?
I am A-, HIV-, and happy to donate. A- is also a rare blood type. Is someone keeping a directory? When I lived in Sierra Leone, I was A- on-call blood donor on demand for MSF.
Rarity always depends on where in the world you are, due to the genetic mix of the population (frequency of different blood types differs between races). A- is rare in Australia, for example, about 7% of the population have it.
Around here though they're looking for a bit (a lot?) of everything, due to not having enough donors, so go for it!

You can donate blood at the Kantha Bopha hosipital on
Street 61, corner Street 88
12201 Phnom Penh,
http://www.investincambodia.com/kanthabopha.htm
This amazing Swiss guy provides FREE western standard health care to children in Cambodia. If you've ever travelled past at about 8.30 in the morning you see a massive line down the block.....and its there every day....he's taken on a hugely overwhelming task.
I've heard that Khmers have a fear of giving blood so the hospital is always in need. Plus you get a free goodies bag and a T-shirt
Re a registry of blood donors, if anyone has it, he will.
Just keeping this post live. 'Tis important.
I agree this is a very good post. I have my Australian blood donor card at home and will check tonight.

I'm blood type B, again not so common. I gave blood in Siem Reap at Kantha Bopha and will again here in PP just as soon as I'm allowed (every 4 months I think). I'm British and yes, was alive, well, living in the UK and eating lots and lots of cows in the 90's. I'm pretty sure I haven't got mad cow disease.... my friends may have different ideas ;o) but I'm sure they test the blood for anything nasty before passing it on. Think it's only the American's who won't touch our blood with a ten foot barge pole! When I went in SR they had no reserves of my blood type at all which was a pretty sad state of affairs.
I helped a friend of a friend of a friend earlier this year with blood after a nasty accident and would really appreciate knowing if there are any B blood types knocking around the Penh at the moment....?
Keep up the good work/donations/comments. A very worth while thread...

I came across a group of volunteers s few days ago who were needing O- to save a little babies life, i know that i'm O+ I called a few friends with no luck, but was told by a friend who's a nurse that you can donate your blood to the national blood bank here and in return take an amount of the blood type you need if you don't wish to pay cash.
I think that I am O Rhesus D -
However I did receive a large blood transfusion in a Western European country in 2003.
I subsequently attempted to give blood in the UK, computer said no. I have had a few Tattoos since then, but get blood tested every three or four months as a matter of habit. Never had a problem.
Does this disqualify me? If not then I'm up for a biscuit and some strong tea in exchange for a bag of blood.
Hello!
I have O-negative blood, and donated at Kantha Bopha yesterday on Street 240.
While I knew that O-negative is not particularly common in general, I was surprised to hear from the doctor that almost no Cambodians have this blood type, only 0.1-0.2%.
I contacted EnRoute8 but he is no longer in Cambodia, however I like his suggestion of creating a network of type O- people who can be contacted to give blood to each other in case of emergency. The doctor seemed to think it unlikely that many hospitals here would have O-negative blood in reserve.
Please message me or send me an email at t_lambourne [at] hotmail [dot] com if you are sure that you're O-negative, and I will keep and circulate a list - just in case.
Cheers,
Tess
Hi Tess,
I'm O-negative too. In case you're still in PP, I would be happy if you could add me to the list.
Cheers,
z
Hello All,
I'm leaving PP this week, but good luck for all my fellow rare-blood types. Hopefully you never need each other!
Cheers, Tess
I'm B- we are even rarer globally than O- and can receive either O- or B- blood - I'm not too useful as a donor though having had malaria multiple times and hepatitis...
yeah i have O+ blood group
My sister has O- blood group (lives in Phnom Penh) and she is also willing to donate if someone needs it.(098980018 or email me at: nosobonita [at] gmail [dot] com)
Cheers,
Bonita
