English Tutor Terms of Reference

Background
World Vision Cambodia’s (WVC) Learning through Evaluation with Accountability and Planning (LEAP) Team is a high performing and hard working team who is looking for a tutor to assist them in improving their professional English writing and speaking abilities. The LEAP team is responsible for supporting Design, Monitoring and Evaluation processes and the development of relevant documents for WVC’s Area Development Programs that are submitted to funding offices worldwide for review and approval. Travel to the field limits their ability to attend structured courses. The team already has significant English ability, but is seeking to improve their English capacity in order to improve the quality of their work.

Description of role
The LEAP team is seeking a native English speaker who can develop English lessons from reviewing current program and project documents. The lessons should focus on addressing grammar, spelling, writing style, and general professional writing rules and tips as applied in the majority of English speaking countries. The lesson should be scheduled during office hours and should be flexible to the team’s travel schedules. It is estimated that there would be 1-2 lessons a month, but this is negotiable and will need to be flexible to the changing needs of the team. The time frame of learning will be proposed for 1 year preferably from August 2008 to August 2009. However the training period can be extension in case of our below objectives would not met according to testing or short evaluation from tutor or LEAP manager.

Objective of learning:
The 3 objectives below have been developed in order to improve the quality of participants in using English writing in term of reviewing or editing the project/ program design, redesign or transition in WVC LEAP cycle.
1. Proper English grammar & spelling
2. Proper use of spoken English
3. Improved ability to write professional documents

Key Responsibilities
1. Develop lessons based on reviewing program documents.
2. Create exercises for practical application as part of the lessons.
3. Provide brief documentation for each lesson and exercise.

Key skills, knowledge, and abilities
1. English native speaker
2. Previous teaching or training or tutoring experience
3. Familiarity with development and humanitarian vocabulary and jargon
4. Flexibility in availability

Budget/ Payment:
Costs that will be covered include:
An hourly fee (negotiable) that will cover lesson time as well as preparation time (and any related tax)
Cost of materials (with reasonable limits)
