Singapore announces destinations for capacity cuts
Thursday, 29 January 2009

Following an earlier announcement that it intends to cut some 200 flights out of its scheduled services, Singapore Airlines this week began the task of singling out which services to cut, with US, EU and Asia all feeling the axe.

“Changes to capacity throughout the network will continue going forward, in an effort to better match capacity with demand, in view of the economic downturn,” said Singapore Airlines.

India will be one of the hardest hit, with Hyderabad, New Delhi and Mumbai all seeing capacity reductions, with each of the three receiving one flight less a week.

The only other Asia destination announced to have its capacity cut will be Bangkok which will drop from 32 services a week to only 25 with the withdrawal of SQ972 and SQ975 until the end of the Northern Winter.

Singapore’s all-business services to Los Angeles and New York (EWR) in the United States will no longer operate daily, but five times a week, with mid-week Tuesday and Wednesday services suspended.

In Europe, Singapore will drop two services a week to both London and Zurich.

In all, 18 flights were cut.

On the other hand, Singapore is expecting to add another weekly service to its Singapore–Abu Dhabi–Kuwait route, as well as an extra weekly service to Singapore–Dubai–Cairo
