BERLIN SUPER 80 (1978-1984) is a 65-minute-program of nine Super-8 shorts produced in West-Berlin's postpunk underground. Amateurism abounds, but the cheap film format ably served the era's do-it-yourself aesthetic, and some pieces have an invigorating immediacy. Georg Marioth's “Morgengesänge” is a Chaplinesque comedy, and grainy, flickering music clips showcase bands like Malaria! and Die Todliche Doris. There's also some fascinating video shot at Berlin's influential club SO36, featuring Einstürzende Neubauten, Die Gelbs, and others.
