4PM: DOCUMENTARY – David Brisbin first visited Cambodia as a reporter in 1987. Since the 1990s, the Kingdom has experienced a renaissance in the scholarship of its rich history and culture. Brisbin’s NICE HAT! 5 ENIGMAS IN THE LIFE OF CAMBODIA (2006, 86 min) features interviews with star director Rithy Panh and curator Ly Daravuth (Reyum). The filmmaker explores the social history of Cambodian hats, from Khmer hats speaking of loyalty, war and necessity, to headdresses connecting the past and present, heaven and earth. He searches for complexity by the simplest of means in exploring how the Khmer have endured the worst that humanity has to offer while somehow remaining a shining example of the best that mankind has to offer.
