DOCUS AND PRESENTATIONS ABOUT LABOR TRAFFICKING - Every year, it is estimated that hundreds of Cambodian men are trafficked to work on fishing vessels in Thailand. These fishermen end up in an exploitative situation where they find themselves trapped as slaves: never-ending work hours, unpaid salaries, hard working conditions, physical abuses, including sexual abuses, forced use of drugs and torture. Many never come back, some commit suicide and the lucky few escape. Giant Ocean International Fishery Co., Ltd was a licensed recruitment agency that is estimated to have cheated and sent 1,000 Cambodian men to work on fishing vessels all over the world in slavery-like conditions. The CTIP II Program of USAID/Cambodia has been providing legal aid to 97 victims who accused the company of human trafficking. On April 29, 2014, the Phnom Penh Court delivered its verdict in favor of the survivors: six convicted persons were sentenced to ten years of imprisonment, and the defendants were also ordered to pay damages and compensation for lost wages to the victims. CTIP II partner Legal Support for Children and Women (LSCW) now continues to work on this case at the appeals court. In Vanna Hem’s new documentary WHERE IS THE HORIZON? (2014, 14 min), three survivors trafficked by the company share their stories of slavery and raise their requests for the responsible to pay for their crime. During the event, representatives from Winrock International and LSCW (Legal Support for Women and Children) will introduce the video testimony and give a presentation of the huge unreported crime of forced labor on fishing vessels. A booklet with the analysis of ten cases of the Giant Ocean trail will also be distributed during the event.

TRAFFICKING BEYOND BORDERS (2013, 8 min) is the remarkable account of a man, Prum Vannak, who has been to hell and back. Since his return he has recreated his experiences in a series of drawings. He believes without these pictures no one would believe his story.

MAN WITHOUT A NATION (2012, 15 min) tells the story of Aung Soe from Myanmar, who was trafficked in Thailand. The trawler, where he was forced to work on, was then captured by Somalian pirates. Two years later, Indian filmmakers met him in jail.

THE DREAMING VENDORS (2010, 50 min) focuses on cross-coastal trafficking and economic migration in Bangladesh. Director Ahmid Abid follows the dangerous journey of Kamal and Fazlu, members of the Muslim Rohingya community.
