Qatar Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassen Bin Jabor Al-Thani, also the country's Foreign Affairs Minister, begins his two-day visit to Cambodia today.
Deputy Prime Minister Hor Namhong said yesterday evening that the Qatar premier, also president of Qatar Airlines, could be instrumental in establishing direct flights between the Arab nation and Cambodia.
Attracting Qatari investors to Cambodia is also a priority, Hor Namhong said: "I was given the duty by Prime Minister [Hun Sen] to promote the opportunity of investment in Cambodia to Qatari investors," he said. "[Deputy Prime Minister] Sok An will talk about [Cambodia's] 'open sky' policy to persuade the Qatari Prime Minister to open an air route with direct flights to Cambodia." Hor Namhong said agreements will be signed during the Qatari premier's visit.
The Qatari Prime Minister will also visit Siem Reap's Angkor temples.
The visit from the head of the oil-rich state of Qatar comes just a few days after Cambodia concluded a three day meeting on fueling poverty reduction with oil and gas revenues. Cambodia is expected to begin large scale oil extraction in 2011.
