As MTV's reigning queen Britney Spears goes ever-deeper into her professional and personal tail-spin, Cambodian music channels offer more and more Asian content to their viewers. A few years ago you couldn't escape images of Taiwanese pretty boys F4; wherever you went in Phnom Penh, there they were, smiling back from t-shirts, bags, posters...These days, chances are it is Korean megastar Rain smiling down on you from the wall of your hairdresser's salon, or booming out of a Karaoke booth.
And as the channels change their content, the listeners are going with them and the artists are coming to them. This month it was announced that Korean five-piece girlband Babyvox will be performing a live concert in Phnom Penh on December 14th.
The five girls performed three songs on CTN's weekly Modern concert programme during the lead-up to the highly anticipated, and heavily publicised, concert by Irish star Ronan Keating, himself a former (and once-again) member of fivesome Boyzone.
This time the girls will be the stars of their own show, performing in CTN's outdoor arena in Russey Keo before an expected crowd of more than 2,000 people. Support will come from local act ANGELS as well as others.
"Babyvox are the highlight of the show," a marketing manager for CTN said. "It will be a very big event, there will be local acts to support them and we expect an audience of thousands. There will be something for everyone."
CMM CEO Glen Lasalle, whose company is behind the show, agrees.
"Babyvox are a hit throughout Asia. Most recently they have played to crowds in Bangkok, Taiwan and Vietnam, but we expect them to be an even bigger hit in Phnom Penh."
Given the Cambodian audience's reaction to Ronan Keating on the night, that may not be such a wild prediction.
Babyvox Re.V (Renaissance Voices) is the second Korean girlband to use the name, rising, phoenix-like, out of the ashes of Baby V.O.X (Voices Of eXpression). The new Babyvox (Re.V) released its eponymous album in Cambodia earlier this year and consists of five members; Jin Kyoung, Eun Ji, Yeon Kyeong, Oh Minjin and Park Sori. Since its inception last year Babyvox has sold over 200,000 CDs, with single Shee hitting number ? in ?
"The show will be as much about dancing as it will about singing," said Glen Lasalle. "The girls will not disappoint."
The show kicks off at 7:30pm at CTN's K6 studio in Russey Keo. Tickets will go on sale Thursday, December 6th.
