Cricket in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

If you are looking for a high quality game of cricket on a flat wicket, soft green grass in the field, a cool south-easterly blowing and seagulls flocking at fine leg, then we can deliver, almost anyway. Just about every month the cricket loving community of Phnom Penh gather on the hallowed turf of the Boeng Keng Kang School oval (corner of streets 63 and 360). We flatten a makeshift pitch in the dust and gravel, mark lines with white powder using precise measuring techniques (usually when someone says 'that looks about right'), hammer the stumps into the ground with rocks, and warm up with a kick of the footy.

The game itself is played with a tennis ball covered in electrical tape and an over-sized cricket bat. The number of overs is based on the number of people who show up on the day, ensuring that everyone who wants to have a bowl or a bat gets one. There are cold beverages available including water, soft drink and beer, and the barbeque prepared by Majid has to be tasted to be believed. The game is designed to be enjoyed by people from all backgrounds, offering all new comers a chance to play regardless of skill level. If you are interested in having a game then just contact Majid at Monsoon Wine Bar, or call him on 012 247 832. Alternatively e-mail Sean at sean.stewart@dfat.gov.au
