It's beginning to look a lot like.....

Some of the "Players" before donning their costumes

It's my first Christmas in Cambodia and, other than seeing colourful, glittery trees in building lobbies, tuktuks festooned with shiny bits of tinsel and shimmery "Marry Christmas" signs on storefronts, I find it hard to believe it's almost that time of year.

But the Phnom Penh Players are hoping you won't forget since this weekend is their Christmas panto - "Robin In Da Hood", a light-hearted romp with the man in tights and his jolly helpers.

The show blends the classic story of the impish robber (Robin, played by Carrie Cordell) stealing from the rich (the Sheriff of Nottingham, played by Berry Schipper) and giving to the poor (basically everyone else.)

It also tosses in a number of other characters, including special guest appearances by Rosencrantz and Guildenstern and Red Riding Hood, combining these un-Nottingham-like characters with the predictable PPP ribald sense of humor.

As you might guess, it's not something to be taken too seriously and the intention is to provide some laughter and fun with a bit of Christmas Motown spirit thrown in for good measure.

The Phnom Penh Players have been cranking out their sold-out hits since 1994 and this will be the final curtain call for co-directors (and actors) Zak Kendall and Caroline James who, among numerous other PPP actors and contributors have helped keep the fun intact and the audiences laughing for years. Both will be leaving their Cambodian posts in 2011, ending their stints on the PPP stage.

"Robin In Da Hood" takes the stage for three performances this weekend - Friday, Dec 10 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Dec 11 at 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The show takes place at the Russian Cultural Center on the corner of Norodom Boulevard and Street 222 and there are still tickets available at Java Cafe, 56 Sihanouk Blvd, for $10 each.

Proceeds go to Epic Arts, which was formed in 2001 as a registered Arts Charity offering professional dance, drama, music and art programs to people of all abilities and disabilities.
