Fans of urban electronica will get a fix in July when DJ Marine from France plays two shows in Phnom Penh.
A veteran of the European underground scene, DJ Marine plays Chow on Friday July 10 and The FCC rooftop Saturday July 11. Both shows start at 8 p.m.
DJ Marine is a founding member of the Illégale Guinguette DJ crew. Her resume includes stints across the European DJ circuit, in cities such as Paris, Barcelona and Berlin. She moved to Asia earlier this year.
"My music is influenced by techno and minimal house artists like Richie Hawtin [ a.k.a Plastikman], Ricardo Villalobos and Lucio Aquilina," she says. "It's a mélange of minimal techno from Berlin and groovy house from Chile -- good beats, good for your mind."
Minimal techno is a sub-genre of electronic dance music marked by stripped-down aesthetics and an understated development, explained noted music author Philip Sherburne in a 2006 issue of Audio Culture magazine.
The genre largely traces its roots to the post-Reagan-era Detroit techno scene and the musical collective Underground Resistance.
Minimal techno corkscrews into the very heart of repetition so cerebrally as to often inspire descriptions like Athenian, clinical, mathematical and scientific, Sherburne wrote.
The Education of DJ Marine
Born Marine Caillat, the 31-year-old native of Marsaille got her first taste of urban electronica as a teenager bouncing around the London music scene.
"There were so many great clubs in those days, and so many great DJs," she says.
In those early days, the South of France offered few opportunities for a young lady to get behind the turntables.
"All you could do was be a groupie," she says.
So along with a group of close friends, she formed the Illégale Guinguette crew, and together they gigged their way around southern France and eventually Europe, playing parties and making a name for themselves.
Earlier this year she followed her sister to Saigon, where she has been shaking the music scene ever since.
The Phnom Penh Sessions
For the gig at Chow, DJ Marine says she will improvise with a collection of minimalist house music from Europe.
"I have a big playlist full of news sounds," she says. "Rarely do I play anything more than three or four months old."
For the show on The FCC Rooftop, DJ Marine will shift gears.
"I'll play more Latino, new and old sounds, not so much electronic stuff," she says. "More groovy."
