“Ladies, I am here today to advise you about the many adjustments you will make when you move overseas with your husbands and become professional expatriate wives. I have been hired by the Corporation because I have extensive experience in this area, so feel free to raise any topic of concern.”

“I have a question,” said one no-nonsense expat wife-to-be. “Why are you a man?”

The male relocation consultant mopped his brow before responding. He had told the Corporation that maybe this wasn’t such a great idea, that wives were not as gullible as they thought.

The 1960s and early 70s were a golden period for Cambodian culture. During this period, Cambodia developed its own distinctive rock’n’roll style, infused with the hypnotic rhythms of traditional Khmer music. Cambodian cinema also flourished, with large crowds drawn to cinemas around the country to watch Cambodian films. Then the Khmer Rouge came to power and this flowering of culture was torn out like a weed. Actors, directors artist and musicians were systematically murdered, only a precious few managed to flee the country.

The two new exhibitions opening on the 10th of January at Java Café and Gallery both explore the contrast between the perceived or expected and darker, more uncertain, underlying realities.

For example, one of the paintings in Ben Thynal’s collection “My Selfish Family”, depicts a tightly wound group of people trapped in a circular formation—their smiling faces purposely misleading when paired with the title “Monster Family.”

When I was interviewing the crew of "At the Horizon", a Lao movie to be produced in June, it took a while when I recognized, that actually the story about the movie is as good as the movies script.

But first things first: At the Horizon is a feature action movie about two different worlds in Laos colliding: The wealthy influential people on the one hand and the poor and honest on the other hand. There is a death, anger, pain and kind of vendetta included. So far, it is something that happens in Laos (and other Southeast-Asian countries) quite often.

It was late on Sunday evening, when finally Mr. Bounchao, the Director of the Department of Cinema in Laos, announced the winner of the 2nd Vientianale: It is "Calendar", a short movie by Thanavorakit Kounthawatphinyo (who also received the Best Young Filmmaker Award). And it was well deserved. The movie tells the story of a young man you "walk" through calendar dates, apparently looking for his girlfriends birthday. It was a big surprise to see a movie that is not only photographed so well, but also has excellent sound, a good script and talented and well playing actors.

A traditional Khmer wedding is one of the most joyous occasions for a Khmer family and typically lasts from three days to an entire week. It is a grand affair, full of color and festivity, as well as steeped in tradition. Family, friends, and other members of the community come together to share in the celebration. Musicians play throughout the day on traditional instruments, and the couple is dressed like royalty. The bride may change her outfit several times in one day.
