Awareness of Our Own Histories

The Mirror, Vol. 14, No. 686

As regular readers of The Mirror know – as I had announced it – I am at present in Germany, and because of health and medical problems, I stay much longer than I had expected. While here for an extended time and not just for some days only, I have much more occasions to reflect on aspects of German society, and drawing lines to Cambodian society, where I spent the last 20 years, since May 1990.

Time and again I become aware how there is a lot of active awareness and discussion about our own history in Germany – especially also about the dark and terrible time, when the majority of German people were adhering to nationalistic feelings and movements, bare of self-critical reflection. This led to Second World War, bringing destruction and death to many millions of people, in Germany and in many neighboring countries.
